What Instagram actually does
Instagram doesn't use the word shadowban, but it does limit how far some content travels. If a post goes against its recommendation guidelines, it can stay visible to your followers while not being recommended to non-followers on Explore or Reels.
You can check this yourself: Settings → Account status. It shows whether any of your content is affecting recommendations.
Common myths
- "Using the same hashtags gets you banned." No. Irrelevant hashtags might just do nothing.
- "Editing a caption kills reach." There's no evidence of this.
- "Buying followers causes a shadowban." Receiving followers isn't a violation. Using automation tools from your own account can get you action-blocked, which is different.
Real reasons reach drops
- Your recent posts are simply weaker.
- You changed niche and your audience lost interest.
- You're posting reposts or watermarked content.
- A post was flagged as not recommendable (check Account status).
- Seasonal dips: exam season, festivals and IPL can all shift attention.
How to recover
Post original Reels for a couple of weeks, remove anything flagged in Account status, avoid banned or spammy hashtags, and stop any third-party apps connected to your account. If you want a new Reel to get a fair start while you rebuild, a small push of views is cheap and doesn't carry any penalty.
