Growth speed
Instagram grows faster at the start. A good Reel can reach tens of thousands of people in a day, even from a small account.
YouTube is slower to start but compounds. A good video keeps getting search traffic for years, and YouTube's recommendations can push old videos back into circulation.
Earning potential
| YouTube | ||
|---|---|---|
| Platform payouts | Limited, varies by program | AdSense revenue share after monetisation |
| Brand deals | Strong, even for small accounts | Strong, higher rates per deal |
| Long-term income | Depends on posting | Old videos keep earning |
Effort
Instagram rewards frequency: four or five Reels a week. YouTube rewards depth: fewer, longer, better videos. Shorts sit in between.
Which should you pick?
- Instagram first if you're visual, enjoy quick content, or run a local business.
- YouTube first if you like explaining things, your niche gets searched (tech, education, finance, cooking), or you want long-term passive income.
Use one to feed the other
Many creators repurpose: a 10-minute YouTube video becomes three Reels. Reels bring followers who then subscribe for the full version.
Starting boosts
On Instagram, people often start with followers and reel views. On YouTube, the typical first orders are subscribers and views on the channel's best video.
